AI for Small Business Australia — Practical Implementation Guide

Australian Government resources now actively support SMEs adopting AI responsibly. The commercial opportunity is real, but the sequence matters: identify the bottleneck, control the data, choose a workflow and measure the result.

Start with one measurable bottleneck

Do not begin with “we need AI”. Begin with “we miss calls”, “quotes are not followed up”, “our team retypes the same information” or “I cannot see what is happening without asking three people”.

Choose the smallest useful system

A narrow workflow is easier to test, safer to govern and easier to measure than a broad “AI transformation” program.

Protect sensitive information

Decide what information may enter AI systems, who can approve outputs and what requires human review. Responsible adoption is part of implementation, not a separate policy document.

Measure the operational change

Track response time, booking rate, time saved, hand-off quality, errors and exceptions. AI should be judged against the process it replaces or improves.
